Intro

We are very pleased to present—as part of the 5th ViennaPhotoBookFestival—the comprehensive artists’ book project “Triester” with two new releases, volumes 11 and 12, on Saturday; and then an excerpt from the Edition Camera Austria on Sunday.

Since 2003 Martin Behr and Martin Osterrider have been embarking on photographic forays into the Triester settlement, where they were raised, in the Graz district of Gries—independently of one another and on a regular basis. They always take the same two paths, ones they had both often traversed during childhood on walks with family or relatives: the “long” and the “short” circuits.

“Triester” is a rare long-term project with open documentation that eschews any kind of ascriptions or any projection of knowledge onto the issues at hand. Instead, it demonstrates interest in the chasms between memory, experience, history, and the present—allowing a narrative to emerge that resembles a temporal cartograph. Since 2013 a series of 12 volumes has been published.

Since 1977 Camera Austria has been publishing books in the Edition Camera Austria with a focus placed on Austrian artists and also on other artists residing in Austria, most recently My First Lioness by Tatiana Lecomte. The publications are created in close collaboration with the artists themselves, often giving a first overview of their work or introducing new projects. In addition to the monographic publications, books are released that take their point of departure from Camera Austria exhibition projects and contribute significantly to current debates.
