New York-based\u00a0Duane Michals<\/strong><\/a> is honoured with the 2017 Culture\u00a0Award by the German Photographic Association (DGPh)<\/a>, a distinction\u00a0that marks the\u00a0association\u2019s recognition of one of America\u2019s most\u00a0significant contemporary artists.\u00a0The award ceremony will take place on\u00a021 October 2017 at the Photographische\u00a0Sammlung\/SK Stiftung Kultur\u00a0in Cologne.\u00a0The laudatory speech will be made by Dr. S\u00f6ke Dinkla,\u00a0director of Lehmbruck Museum in Duisburg.\u00a0The award, which has been\u00a0handed out annually by the DGPh since 1959,\u00a0honors significant\u00a0photographic achievements, particularly in the artistic, humanitarian,\u00a0social, technical, educational or scientific field.<\/p>\n

Highly active to this day, the artist Duane Michals has been working with the\u00a0medium of photography since the end of the 1950s.\u00a0Born in\u00a01932 in McKeesport,\u00a0Pennsylvania, USA, he studied Graphic Design at the University of Denver\u00a0between 1949 and 1953; after that, he served in the US Army and was stationed\u00a0in Germany, among other places. From 1956 onwards he built on his studies at\u00a0the\u00a0Parsons School of Design.\u00a0Michals took his first shots in 1958 on a journey to Russia. From that moment\u00a0on, the medium of\u00a0photography was to become an important means of\u00a0expression for him, and continues to be so to the present day.<\/p>\n

He chooses\u00a0different forms of presentation, while lending particular importance to the serial-narrative aspect.\u00a0In 1966,\u00a0Michals\u00a0took part alongside\u00a0Bruce Davidson, Lee\u00a0Friedlander, Danny Lyon\u00a0and\u00a0Garry Winogrand\u00a0in the seminal exhibition \u201cTowards\u00a0a Social Landscape\u201d\u00a0at\u00a0George Eastman House, Rochester.\u00a0\u201cStories by Duane\u00a0Michals\u201d was the title in\u00a01970\u00a0of his first solo exhibition at the\u00a0Museum of Modern\u00a0Art, New York.\u00a0It became evident early on that the description \u201cphotographer\u201d alone does no\u00a0justice to Michals\u2019s complex approach, with his imaginatively staged image\u00a0production. For his concern, again and again, is the staging and heightening of\u00a0impressions of reality that go beyond the concretely documentary. What chiefly\u00a0attracts him is not the single image, but, right from the 1960s, the sequence\u00a0created in black-and-white images, a specific form of visual narrative or photographic \u201cstage play\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
