OPEN CALL – GRAZ RESIDENCY for INTERNATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHERS

An initiative by Camera Austria and Kulturvermittlung Steiermark
Place of residency: GRAZ, AUSTRIA

We are delighted to announce the third round of a scholarship that Camera Austria and Kulturvermittlung Steiermark are collaboratively offering in the fall of 2024.

The scholarship is intended as an opportunity for photographers to focus on their artistic work and research in the city of Graz. It would thus be highly appreciated if the selected artist would reside in the city between mid-September and mid-October 2024 and shows an interest in getting to know the city’s vibrant local art scene and in connecting with its protagonists. During the residency period, the international festival steirischer herbst will also be running in Graz and offers an opportunity to engage with its heterogeneous program.

During their stay, the selected artist will have time to work on an already ongoing project or to develop a new one and/or to conduct research. Further, the fellow is invited to use the extensive study library of Camera Austria during the institution’s opening hours.

The residency comprises a fully equipped apartment in the city center of Graz and a scholarship of € 1,000.– for the period of their stay. Furthermore, travel expenses from their regular place of residency to Graz and back after the residency will be reimbursed.

The residency will conclude with a presentation on the selected artist’s work in the exhibition and library space of Camera Austria.

Camera Austria – Labor für Fotografie und Theorie
Since 1980, the magazine Camera Austria International has been providing its readers with insights into important discourses on the role of photography as a medium and practice of contemporary art—presenting outstanding artists who have made extraordinary contributions to the continual development of the medium. The exhibition program, which places a focus on solo exhibitions, usually presents long-term projects developed specifically for Camera Austria. The respective artistic positions shed light on important image-political issues and cover a broad, multilayered spectrum of research on the photographic image: specters of archives, questions related to knowledge production, the construction of identities, artistic research, feminist critique, the reconstruction of history, and the erosion of social utopias.
