Preface

The title of this issue of CAMERA AUSTRIA is “Masterpieces”: inside we present ten of the world’s most famous photographs from the Tillmann & Vollmer collection. In CAMERA AUSTRIA we endeavor to present previously unpublished material; should you have seen some of these works in print before this due also to the exceptional scope of the present issue which prevented earlier publication; in the case of the Tillmann & Vollmer “Masterpieces” there is a book as well- our congratulations to the collectors.

Photography in Austria is a major topic in this issue: 36 photographers are represented with a piece of their recent work chosen jointly with the artists as representative. Wherever necessary, the photographers have adder explanatory noes on the context from which the image were taken. In general, the photographs presented are individual images- personal favorites, “masterpieces” one day? Where there are sequences and series these are shown in their entirety.

Other features in this issue of CAMERA AUSTRIA are the forest part of a series by Timm Starl “Notes on a Cultural History of Photography”, a report on the photographic scene in Frankfurt and Rolf Sachsse’s “Marginalia” – all to be continued in future issues.

An important text in criticism by Lewis Baltz on individual images by Robert Adams, Anthony Hernandez, William Eggleston and John Gossage provides a glimpse of photo-criticism in the U.S., already pointing to the coming “Symposion on Photography” VII when the relationship “Europe-America” will be explored.

We thank the Federal Ministry for Education, Sport and Arts, as well as the Provincial Governments of Salzburg and Lower Austria for their financial support of this issue of CAMERA AUSTRIA. Thanks are also due to our subscribers for their hard-tried patience and to the authors of this issue, the latter also in the name of our readers
