Intro

Belinda Kazeem-Kamiński, recipient of the Camera Austria Award for Contemporary Photography by the City of Graz 2021, will present two of her films and talk with Christina Töpfer about her artistic practice on Tuesday, July 5, 2022, 6 p.m., at the ParisBerlin>fotogroup’s Fotohaus Arles. After the presentation we will be happy to invite you for a drink.

The artist’s inspiration for The Letter (2019) came from an open letter written in 1896 by Yaarborley Domeï—a member of a group of West African performers brought to Europe—which she published in the Viennese newspaper Wiener Caricaturen. The video retells the story to investigate the power of the archive in the constitution of collective memory and of the gaze.

Fleshbacks (2021) is a three-part annotation to The Letter. Even though the film’s performers are not the same as in The Letter, they show a certain connection to them through the props they hold and the black coveralls they wear. As the work progresses, something starts shifting. They begin moving around the city—they are all following an affect, leading them into a zone where the lines between Vienna and Accra, between the then and the now, as well as the here and there, become blurry and ultimately obsolete.

As part of Les Rencontres de la photographie 2022, Belinda Kazeem-Kamiński’s work Unearthing: In Conversation (2017) can be seen in the exhibition If a Tree Falls in a Forest at the Croisière (65 boulevard Émile Combes).
