Intro

In his group of works, Universal Thoughts (or whatnot) (2023), Georg Petermichl takes a look at his family of origin and inquires into the role of photography as a socially stabilizing and simultaneously analytical medium. The photographs of the family members used in the large-scale photographic installation reveal intimate relationships, deliberately over- or underexposing the subject, while allowing for distance and an openness to interpretation. In an artist’s talk with the curator Anna Voswinckel, the artist Georg Petermichl will share insights into the creation process of his work and discuss the relevance of photographic exposure as means of artistic production.

Georg Petermichl lives and works in Vienna (AT). He studied journalism and communication science at the University of Vienna and photography at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. Petermichl worked as a freelance theater critic for Der Standard, www.Nachtkritik.de, and others through 2011. Since that time, he’s been active as a freelance artist and considers his work in applied photography for galleries and museums as well as for Heimo Zobernig and Jakob Lena Knebl to be part of his artistic practice. He has been a member of the Association of Visual Artists Vienna Secession since 2018. In 2022–2023 he headed the class for photography and new media at the Mozarteum Salzburg (AT).
