Intro

Two enigmatic verses from a witchcraft manual draw attention to the figure of the witch. In an abandoned woodworking shop, alongside running machinery, the four performers, who all come from queer-feminist contexts, work with a choreography of gestures derived from former working practices, early modern witch poses that have been passed down, and elements of contemporary dance. Scenes around an abandoned border post reference early border demarcations and the associated resistance during the Middle Ages. In her timeless film 9 Is One and 10 Is None (2017, 22 min), Veronika Eberhart alludes to a publication by Silvia Federici, Caliban and the Witch, which, starting in the late Middle Ages and moving into the transition to capitalism, examines how the female body was disciplined and destroyed.

Situated in a late-capitalist present, the film questions the current role of female bodies, a topic discussed in the scope of the artist talk with a view to issues of gender equality and diversity and against the backdrop of transformations in the workplace.

In her works, the artist and musician Veronika Eberhart navigates a broad spectrum encompassing film, sound, performance, photography, sculpture, and installation. Eberhart’s practice is characterized by pronounced musicality and also engages with conceptual explorative questions and spatial metaphors.

Nora Melzer is a lawyer conducting research and teaching in the fields of employment law, social law, and related legal fields in the Faculty of Law at the University of Graz and the University of Klagenfurt. Her interests are currently focused on topics like how the digitalization of the working world is impacting law and what legal measures are still needed in order for all genders to be treated equally.
