Preface
6. INTERNATIONALES SYMPOSION DER SAMMLUNG FOTOGRAFIS LÄNDERBANK WIEN
OCTOBER 23rd – 25th, 1981
The Sixth International Symposium “Critism and Photography, Part 2” that was held by the Collection FOTOGRAFIS Länderbank Vienna, was the theoretical part of the 5th Viennese International Biennal “Extended Photography”. This year’s Biennal, which was run by the Vienna Secession, took place in October/November of 1981.
The main topics discussed at the symposium ranged from the way photography is dealt with in Austrian museums, schools and universities, photography as a collector’s item as well as the problems arising in the conservation and storage of photographs, to general issues related to art and cultural criticism.
All of the papers given at the symposium pointed to the fact that this medium covers a wide field. Future developments were broached on, viewpoints of the past were reexamined.
As a singular event the 6th International Symposium held by the Collection FOTOGRAFIS Länderbank Vienna can be regarded as the most relevant one since 1976.
We hope that the reader will find his/her way through the thicket of theses and antitheses presented here, as our editors, translators and all of the other co-workers did in a most commendable way. A crusade for photography!
