Preface

In his contribution on Kaucyila Brooke, Martin Prinzhorn presents an artist who is devoted to a highly complex photographic practice: on the one hand, she reflects on the theoretical implications of the medium, visualising them in her work. But these are never the sole principal subject of her artistic work, on the contrary: above and beyond a methodical / theoretical context of reflection, Brooke uses her photographs to explore subjects that belong to the mutually conditional (diametrically opposed) relationship of personal experience / own identity and political claim.

Although he does not wish to be referred to as a “political artist”, as the Chilean artist Alfredo Jaar reveals in an interview with Wolfgang Brückle and Rachel Mader, Jaar?s chief interest is quite unequivocally the political sphere. His work refers to his personal experience in socalled Third World countries and is characterised by a desire to visualise political coherences and to oppose the tendency to forget – or rather, repress. “I try to create bridges between different worlds that I think are incredibly connected, when most people do not perceive this connection.”

Camera Austria has a general interest in presenting individual works or complexes of works by artists who are not yet known to a wide audience. This may also apply to Anne Bertrand?s contribution on the work of the artist Melik Ohanian who, in the past two years, has become known mainly for his videos, installations and films. Not so well known is his photographic Oeuvre that we would like to showcase in this issue, for one thing in order to present the photographic part of this multimedia work.

Another focus of our work is on direct co-operation with artists, which is why in addition to theoretical texts by critics and authors, we also frequently document discussions with artists. In this issue, Monica Bonvicini and Sam Durant will have their say in a discussion hosted by Matthias Herrmann that focuses primarily on their joint work on the »Break it / Fix it« exhibition at the Secession, Vienna.

We are pleased to announce that our network of correspondents is now so extensive that this issue features not only discussions from Germany and Austria but also reviews from the Netherlands and France, America, Canada and Great Britain, and also a review by Antonia Carver from Teheran: “For Bam” – curated by Atila Pessiani and Amir Mo’bed on the occasion of the devastating earthquake in Bam in December 2003 “… is one of only a handful of non-gallery, mixed-media public shows curated by artists to have taken place in Iran since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.”

To round off, we provide details on Camera Austria’s exhibitions at Kunsthaus Graz. In June we are set to open an exhibition by the 2003 Camera Austria Award winner, Aglaia Konrad, who will be developing a project for us on the basis of her archive of contemporary documentary architectural photography of the urban space, an archive that she has put together over the course of many years.
In August we will be presenting Gerald Van Der Kaap, an artist who works in a wide range of art disciplines and cultural contexts: as a photo and media artist, as editor of magazines and publications, as co-author of televisions shows, and as a VJ at live multimedia projects. The exhibition presents a cross-section of current and, as always, unpredictable projects by the artist.
This year, in addition to Art Basel, Camera Austria is also featuring again at Artforum in Berlin and at Art Cologne. We look forward to seeing you at our stand!
