Intro
The release of four new publications by Simon Fraser University, School for Contemporary Arts will be celebrated on March 31, 2017. Among them the following two books by Urban Subjects (Sabine Bitter, Jeff Derksen, Helmut Weber): The Militant Image Reader (Edition Camera Austria, 2015) and Front, Field, Line, Plane: Researching the Militant Image (adocs, 2016). The first brings together diverse texts from theorists and artists who speculate on the relationship between artistic representation and societal change today whereas the second questions how struggles of political and social nature and also state violence are represented, mediated, and circulated through images.
