The artists Martin Behr and Martin Osterider, both born 1964 in Graz, have been embarking since 2003 on photographic forays into the Triester district of Graz, where they grew up. They take paths familiar to both from the frequent family strolls of their childhood. The book series Triester has been published since 2013 in the Edition Camera Austria—as an interminable image archive about an urban district, based on the continual surveying of a public space. The volume at hand takes up Behr and Osterider’s experimental film Triester, ein Farbfilm (Triester: A Film in Color) and devotes itself to the distinctive coloring of the buildings in the Triester district. The moving images and stills brought together in the film, of which a selection is shown here, reflect the play of color seen on the walls over the course of a day or throughout the seasons of the year, yet without revealing the actual place the photograph was taken. The images, with their reduced form that at times recalls Color Field painting, show both the diversity and the fragility of the area in equal measure.
