Intro

Come around and celebrate the release of our summer issue, Camera Austria International No. 158, with us!

Many of the contributions in this issue examine the question of how artists position themselves in the field of tension between creative and wage work, how it might be possible to revolutionize post-industrial forms of work from within, to design them in a socially compatible way, and to create an awareness of work that takes place in the background.
On the occasion of the magazine presentation, two of the artists presented in this issue, LAURA BIELAU and KATHI HOFER, will develop a pop-up exhibition.

LAURA BIELAU will show a selection of photographs from her series ARBEIT (2016–19). Author Jens Asthoff describes “the openness, the semantic interconnectedness between motifs, some of which are general, some highly specific” as characteristic for Bielau’s artistic approach—an approach where “context provides the crucial dynamic [since] images are never presented alone.”

KATHI HOFER will present works from her project “Grandma” Prisbrey’s Bottle Village (2019–21) in the scope of the pop-up exhibition. As Anthony Carfello writes in his contribution on the artist’s work, “Hofer’s practice recalls the approach of the US chronicler Studs Terkel in his interview collection Working (1974), where ‘people talk about what they do all day and how they feel about what they do,’ as indicated in the book’s subtitle.”

We would be delighted to meet you on this afternoon at Bethanien!
