Description

Since 2003 the artists Martin Behr and Martin Osterider, both born 1964 in Graz, have been embarking on photographic forays—independently of one another and on a regular basis—through the Gries neighborhood in the eponymous district of Graz where they both grew up. They always take paths familiar to them from their childhood. The project “Triester” has been published in the Edition Camera Austria since 2013 as an open-ended and never-ending visual archive focused on an urban district. It is a survey of space which again and again no longer exists, yet which always seems contemporary. Each part of the city, each urban area, has its own unspoken and unofficial center of gravity, a place with meaning that only becomes clear over the course of time. The Gasthaus Buchmesser is one such gravitational center. Established in 1955, today it appears to have fallen out of time or to belong to another era altogether. Perhaps it is for this very reason that this place lends itself to picture-based conjecture on the upheaval of the present.
