This issue showcases the “exposure” project by Barbara Probst, who is participating in the exhibition “The Resistance of Photography” and who is presented by Reinhard Braun. The artist refers to a paradigm of photography, the facticity of the moment, but breaks down this moment into different perspectives that are, per se, both true and insufficient. Exposure – uncovering, revealing – as synonyms of photographic practice are enacted and at the same time put into perspective. Facticity is a construct, with omissions and contradictions being part of photographic practice itself. The authenticity of the photographic image and the constellations between reality, perception and representation are also the focus of the most recent cycle of works by Thomas Ruff, the topic of Herta Wolf’s discussion in this issue. The pictures of “Machines”, hailing back to sales brochures from the nineteen-thirties, are examined by linking up analogue and digital photography.

Preface

Manisha Jothady positions the image world of Nicolas Jasmin alias N.I.C.J.O.B against the backdrop of different practices of appropriation in connection with cultural developments since the 1990s, in which the links between visual culture and music have become multiplied. Sampling, cutting, scratching form the basis of his works, in which he recycles sequences from feature films, suspends passages of time in the source material or drives them to a standstill by means of repetition.

In an interview with Roberta Valtorta, one of Italy’s most important photography experts and head curator of the Archivio dello Spazio, the photo-historian Thilo Koenig presents the history and activities of this Milanese institution founded in 1987. Contributing significantly to the basic stock of the newly opening Museo di Fotografia Contemporanea in the region of Milan, the Archivio dello Spazio collaborates with Italian and international photographers in its focus on the photographic documentation of rural and urban structural change in this region.

We are pleased to present the first issue in 2004, Camera Austria No. 85, and we would like to take this “round number” as an occasion to thank our readers, the authors, and artists as co-producers for your abiding interest in our work, and you are all warmly invited to carry on taking part in our work. “Magazines such as Camera Austria, it seems, have a social role ? to act as a meeting place for a group of interested people”, British publicist David Brittain recently said, and the Japanese sociologist Toshiya Ueno describes our work as a »Contact Zone«, a term used by James Clifford to define a space in which that which is geographically and historically separated may enter into contact and establish relations. We hope that we will be able to further increase this social function of our work.
