Intro

“Stefanie Seibold examines in her artistic work forms of social performativity and possibilities of its transformation and resignification. In live performances, videos and sound pieces as well as (archival) installations Seibold rephrases influential rituals, gestures, and speech acts that are applied to form subjects. She appropriates images and texts from the heterogeneous areas of the mainstream, of subculture, but also of the avant-garde and weaves them together in the form of a subjective archive. Her interest aims at building spaces that question strategies of visibility as well as defer fixed areas of meaning in order to develop and provide new narrative structures.” (Peggy Buth)

Based on an intense, long-standing exploration of the history of performance and action art, along with its canonisation, documentation, archivation, and its critical reception, Stefanie Seibold has conceptualised an outstanding artwork for “Art is Concrete“. Taking up an artistic position from the avant-garde of the 1970s, Gina Pane, Seibold’s work thematises, among other issues, the specific relationship between photography and live performance in Pane’s oeuvre. After research was conducted on Gina Pane, the method of artistic appropriation acquired a central position here, as did the question of how relevant it would be to once again perform gestures of historical events. Focal points considered include the issue of how inherently meaningful the re-enactment of historical performances in a present-day art context really is, understood here in terms of a critical appropriation, as well as the interlinking of references from art theory and sciences with artistic processes and explicit historical references, such as a search for traces of historical motifs.

The installation is based on the results of research carried out by Stefanie Seibold in collaboration with Teresa Maria Diaz Nerio (artist, Amsterdam), and Patricia Grzonka (art and architecture historian, Vienna).
